VW 9w3 to 9w7 Bluetooth module upgrade

Just replaced the 9w3 Bluetooth unit with a 9w7. It was really simple. Also ran some wire to the back of the head unit to get stereo over Bluetooth audio. Works 100% OK. Also get feedback on the MFD with signal strength etc. Didn’t even need to hook up the VCDS to recode anything. The steering wheel buttons just work.

Car: 2010 Volkswagen Tiguan Wolfsburg Edition
Headunit: RCD-510

Parts for upgrade:
Bluetooth Module: 9w7 5k0 E
Repair Wire: Part number … x2
Torx-20 screw driver
Plastic molding removal tools
Rag

Steps:

Note: unhooked car battery negative terminal.
– More detailed steps soon!

1. Remove old Bluetooth module. Should be under the passenger seat. Will need a socket wrench to get the three bolts out.
2. Unplug the unit by pressing on the little black catch, then release the white clamp.
3. Remove one t20 screw from deep inside footwell on passenger side center console. No need to remove the panel.
4. Remove head unit from dash. (More detail to follow)
5. Remove green plug from back of headunit. Add repair wire pins in slot 5 and 11.
6. Run cable down back through loosened panel in footwell.
7. Add repair wire pins 4 and 5 (match colors of 5 and 11 on back of headunit)
8. Plug it back in to new BT module
9. Put headunit back in.
10. Re-attach air bag display
11. Attach negative battery terminal and pair your phone. Make sure you get audio out of left and right over BT audio.
12. Unhook battery again.
13. Hide the new wire under the footwell panel.
14. Put everything back together and re-attach the battery.
15. If you get a ‘partial assisted electronic steering warning’ and steering is a little stiff, drive around for a few.minutes and it will correct itself.

Now to sell the 9w3 on ebay!

Thanks for the post… did u ever get a chance to upload the “more detailed steps”?

  2. Unfortunately, I did not. The installation process was really simple, though. I’ll dig around my SD cards and see if I can find the pictures, and if I do will upload them.

Where did you buy the 9W7 module, and how much did you pay? The only place I can find is eBay, out of Shanghai China, which has be a little leary….

Great write-up! I hope to install bluetooth on my ’09 Tiguan as I did not get the option when I first bought the car. I’m currently researching all I can before I attempt to DIY. With that I have a few questions, where did you you buy the 9W7? What is the part number/version and how much did it cost you?

    Thanks!

  5. I looked through some VW community sites (like VWVortex), as they usually have classifieds. That lead me to someone selling them directly, although we completed our transaction via eBay. At the time, the module cost about $150.

  6. I looked through the classifieds on sites such as VWVortex, and found someone selling them locally. They are usually able to tell you exactly which model will work best with your Tig and phone. At the time, the module I got cost me about $150, and we completed our transaction using eBay. It worked out great, though, as he included the wire harness I needed to get the left channel speakers hooked up as well.

    Thanks.
